Studying in Canada from India at undergraduate level means applying to specific programmes, not universities, through three or four separate portals: OUAC 105 for every Ontario university, UBC's own application, McGill's own, and Alberta, SFU and the rest individually. Admission is mostly computed from Grade 12 subject marks, with deadlines around 15 January 2027 for Toronto, UBC, McGill and Waterloo Engineering, offers from February to May, and a study permit that now needs a Provincial Attestation Letter and CAD 23,448 in living-cost funds plus first-year tuition. No SAT, no counsellor recommendation, and at most universities no essay.

That simplicity is why Canada is the most predictable of the big destinations for an Indian classroom, and also why families under-prepare for it. The application is easy; the decisions around it are not. Which programme, since computer science and arts at the same university are 8 points apart. Whether the programme leads to a Post-Graduation Work Permit. Whether the family can show the funds by the September threshold. Below is the 2026-27 version, in the order the decisions have to be made.

How Canadian admission actually works: marks, and which marks

Most Canadian universities compute an admission average from the Grade 12 subjects the programme requires, use Grade 11 finals and Grade 12 mid-year or predicted marks for early offers, and confirm against the board result in May. CBSE and ISC percentages are read against published cut-offs, IB against a total score, A-levels against grades. There is no reading of the whole person at McGill, Alberta, McMaster or most of Ontario; the number either clears the line or it does not.

Two consequences. The programme matters more than the university: computer science, engineering and commerce at Toronto, Waterloo and UBC typically admit Indian board students at 93 to 97 percent in the required subjects, while arts, life sciences and general science at the same universities admit in the high 80s to low 90s. And a missing prerequisite, almost always Grade 12 Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry, is an automatic rejection regardless of the average. A student who dropped Mathematics in Grade 11 cannot apply to any business, science or engineering programme in Canada, which is why what to do in Grade 10 starts with subject choice.

Programme type Toronto, Waterloo, UBC, McGill (CBSE/ISC) McMaster, Queen's, Western, Alberta SFU, York, Calgary, Dalhousie IB, competitive programmes
Computer science, engineering 93 to 97 90 to 93 85 to 90 36 to 40
Commerce, business 92 to 96 90 to 93 85 to 88 36 to 39
Life sciences, general science 88 to 92 85 to 90 80 to 85 32 to 36
Arts, humanities, social sciences 85 to 90 82 to 88 78 to 85 30 to 34

The named programmes families ask about, in typical recent bands: Waterloo Computer Science and Software Engineering from about 95 percent, the rest of Waterloo Engineering 92 to 95, Toronto Computer Science at St George 95 and above with Mississauga and Scarborough a few points lower, Rotman Commerce 92 to 96, UBC Computer Science about 93 and Sauder 92 to 95, McGill Engineering 90 to 93, and Western's Ivey AEO from about 92 with the leadership record doing the rest.

These are typical bands from recent cycles, not published guarantees; each university's India page has its own table and cut-offs move with the applicant pool. The Canada destination page keeps the working list by university.

The exceptions where a profile matters: UBC, Waterloo, Toronto Engineering, Ivey

Four places add a written component, and they are the only Canadian applications where an activities record moves the outcome.

  • UBC requires a personal profile from every applicant: a set of short answers, typically 50 to 250 words each, about experiences, a challenge, what you learned and what you would contribute, scored by trained readers alongside marks. A 90 with a strong profile can beat a 94 with a weak one, and the profile is where a US-style record earns its place in Canada.
  • Waterloo's Admission Information Form covers activities, employment, reasons for the programme, and for engineering a short recorded video interview. A strong AIF can add a few points to the admission average, which at Waterloo's cut-offs is the whole margin. It is due 1 February 2027, and a form completed the night before reads like one.
  • Toronto Engineering has an online student profile with timed written and video responses; Rotman Commerce has a supplemental application.
  • Western's Ivey Advanced Entry Opportunity gives conditional admission to the HBA at entry, and it weighs leadership and activities more than anything else in Ontario.

We treat these four as the essays of a Canadian application and draft them with the rigour of a Common App supplement, because for a Waterloo CS or UBC Sauder applicant they decide the file. The writing rules are the same as in how to write activity descriptions: what you did, what changed, with a number where one exists.

The weighting is worth stating plainly, because Indian applicants keep misreading it. Clearing the published average gets a file into the pool. The supplemental form then decides which files in that pool receive offers, since almost everyone in the pool has cleared the number. Waterloo applies the AIF as an adjustment to the admission average, and where the cut-off is 95 percent, an adjustment of a few points is the entire decision.

OUAC 105, and the other portals

Every Ontario university, including Toronto, Waterloo, McMaster, Queen's, Western and Ottawa, takes applications through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre. Applicants outside the Ontario school system, which is every student in India, use the 105 form. One form covers all Ontario universities; you pay a base fee, typically about CAD 156, for three programme choices and can add more for a per-choice fee. The same university can appear more than once for different programmes, and it is a genuine tactic: Toronto Computer Science at St George and at Mississauga, or Waterloo Software Engineering and Computer Science.

After you submit, each university sends its own portal login, and transcripts, the AIF, the Toronto Engineering profile and English scores are uploaded there. The OUAC date and the document deadlines are different, and it is the document deadline students miss.

UBC, McGill, Alberta, SFU, Calgary and Dalhousie are outside OUAC and each has its own application and fee. A typical Indian list touches OUAC plus two or three of these, so the calendar has four or five separate accounts and deadlines, all in our deadlines resource.

Co-op: the reason to choose one programme over another

Waterloo built its reputation on co-op, alternating four-month study and paid work terms across the degree, typically five or six work terms, so that graduates leave with about two years of experience and, often, the employer who hired them last. Toronto's PEY internship, UBC's co-op streams, SFU across its faculties, and most engineering schools offer variants.

For an Indian family the arithmetic matters. Co-op earnings of CAD 40,000 to 80,000 across a degree offset a meaningful share of fees, and a Canadian work term is the most reliable route to the job that later supports permanent residence. Admission to co-op is usually decided at entry, with a higher cut-off than the regular stream, so declare it on the application rather than plan to transfer in; transfers into co-op after first year are limited and competitive.

The study permit is now part of the strategy

Since 2024 Canada has capped new study permits, with 155,000 for new arrivals in 2026, allocated by province. Universities issue a Provincial Attestation Letter with the offer; without one the permit application is refused. Undergraduate degrees at public universities are safe within the cap, but processing times and refusal rates for Indian applicants have risen, so the file has to be complete on first submission.

How far they have risen is the part families underestimate. Immigration department figures reported in late 2025 showed about 74 percent of study permit applications from India refused in August 2025, against roughly 32 percent in August 2023, the highest rate among large source countries, while the refusal rate across all nationalities sat near 40 percent. A public university degree offer improves the odds, but the scrutiny of proof of funds and of the study plan letter now applies to every file. Read why Canadian study permits are refused for Indian students while you are assembling the documents, not after a refusal letter.

What the file needs, for applications from 1 September 2026:

  1. The letter of acceptance and the Provincial Attestation Letter from the university.
  2. Proof of funds: CAD 23,448 for the first year's living costs, plus first-year tuition, plus return transport. For a big-four programme that is typically CAD 70,000 to 95,000 in evidence.
  3. Acceptable evidence: a Guaranteed Investment Certificate from a Canadian bank, an Indian education loan sanction letter, four months of bank statements, or a combination.
  4. A study plan letter that reads as genuine: why this programme, why Canada, and what comes after.
  5. Biometrics, a medical if required, and the CAD 150 fee.

The living-cost figure is indexed each September, so a family planning for 2027 entry should budget above it and confirm the current threshold on the IRCC page before applying. And choose the programme with the permit in mind: public university degrees qualify; most college diplomas and the private-public partnership colleges that recruit heavily in India do not lead to a PGWP and are increasingly refused at the permit stage.

The PGWP and working after the degree

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is why most Indian families choose Canada, and it has narrowed for everyone except degree students. A PGWP matches the length of the programme up to three years, so a four-year bachelor's at a public university earns the full three. Since November 2024 graduates of non-degree programmes must be in an eligible field of study; bachelor's, master's and doctoral graduates are exempt, and IRCC froze the eligible-field list for 2026. You need CLB 7 English, which is roughly IELTS 6.0 in each band, full-time study, and an application within 180 days of completion. During the degree you can work 24 hours a week off campus.

Set against the alternatives: the UK Graduate visa drops to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and US OPT is 12 months plus 24 for STEM degrees on a lottery-dependent path afterwards. On post-study work rights alone, Canada's three years for a degree graduate is the clearest offer, which is why we compare programmes by co-op and PGWP outcome rather than by ranking when the family's goal is to work in Canada.

What it costs in CAD and INR

Toronto, UBC, McGill, Waterloo Alberta, Calgary, Dalhousie, York, SFU
Tuition CAD 45,000 to 70,000 CAD 30,000 to 40,000
Living, insurance, books CAD 15,000 to 22,000 CAD 13,000 to 18,000
Annual total CAD 60,000 to 90,000, about ₹38,00,000 to ₹58,00,000 About CAD 45,000 to 55,000, roughly ₹29,00,000 to ₹35,00,000
Four years without aid or co-op About ₹1.5 to 2.3 crore About ₹1.2 to 1.4 crore

Toronto and Waterloo computer science and engineering sit at the top of the tuition band, and McGill is the cheapest of the big four for some faculties. Co-op earnings and 24 hours a week of term-time work bring the net figure down materially; a Waterloo engineering graduate with six work terms can offset a year or more of fees. Fees rise annually, so confirm the current programme fee on the university page before building the budget.

Scholarships for Indian students

Undergraduate aid in Canada is thinner than in the US, but it exists, and the large awards need the school to act in November of Grade 12.

Award What it covers How you get it
University of Toronto Lester B. Pearson Full tuition, books, residence for four years School nomination by late November 2026, then a Toronto application by mid-January
UBC International Scholars (Karen McKellin, Donald Wehrung) Up to full cost, need and merit School nomination in November, UBC application and personal profile by 15 January
Waterloo President's Scholarship of Distinction CAD 2,000 plus enrichment awards Automatic at 95 percent admission average
McGill entrance scholarships CAD 3,000 to 12,000, one-off or renewable Automatic consideration or a separate application by the January deadline
York, Alberta, Calgary entrance awards CAD 5,000 to 20,000 a year, some renewable Automatic at published averages, typically 90-plus

The Pearson and UBC nominations are the two that Indian schools miss most often, because the school has to submit a form before the student has applied. Ask in September; the Grade 12 calendar places both in November. Everything else is merit at entry, computed from marks, which is another reason the Grade 11 and Grade 12 numbers are the whole application.

The 2026-27 calendar

  1. September to October 2026: OUAC 105 and UBC applications open; shortlist programmes and co-op streams; book IELTS if the English waiver does not apply.
  2. November: school nominations for Pearson and UBC International Scholars.
  3. 15 January 2027: Toronto, UBC, McGill and Waterloo Engineering deadline; upload Grade 11 finals and Grade 12 mid-year marks.
  4. 1 February: Waterloo AIF and video interview; other Waterloo programmes; Toronto document deadline.
  5. February to May: offers in waves, early for strong files; accept and pay the deposit, usually by 1 June.
  6. May to July: board result to the university; PAL issued; study permit application with proof of funds and biometrics.
  7. August to September: arrive; classes start in early September.

If you are in Grade 10 or 11 now

Grade 10: choose Grade 11 subjects against the programme's prerequisites, not the school's default stream. Mathematics for anything in business, science or engineering; Physics and Chemistry for engineering. Grade 11: these finals are used for early offers, so they are not a practice year. Build the two or three activities that will fill the UBC profile and the Waterloo AIF, ideally with a visible output, as our profile building work sets it up. Start the funds conversation now, since the permit needs the money in a form a visa officer accepts, and a GIC or loan sanction takes weeks to arrange. A student who wants the programme list, the four portals, the nominations and the permit file managed together can see what our college admissions counselling covers.

Where this guide stops

This assumes a CBSE, ISC, IB or A-level student applying for first-year entry to a degree programme at a public university with a September 2027 start. It does not cover college diplomas, pathway programmes or the private-public partnerships, which have different admission rules and, in most cases, no longer lead to a PGWP; it does not cover Quebec's CEGEP route or French-medium universities, where the requirements differ; and it does not cover January intakes, which exist at some universities for some programmes but exclude most scholarships. The study permit figures are those in force from September 2026 and the cap is set annually, so confirm both on the IRCC page in the month you apply.

Questions this article answers

Which Canadian universities should an Indian student apply to?

It depends on the programme more than the name. For computer science, engineering and commerce, Toronto, Waterloo, UBC and McGill are the selective four and need CBSE or ISC marks in the mid-90s; McMaster, Queen's, Western and Alberta admit the same programmes in the low 90s. For arts, life sciences and general science, the same big four admit in the high 80s. Every list should include two programmes where the student's average sits five points above the published cut-off, such as SFU, York, Calgary or Dalhousie.

Does Canada require the SAT for Indian applicants?

No. No Canadian university requires the SAT or ACT from Indian board students, and a score rarely changes the outcome. Admission is computed from Grade 12 subject marks against the programme's prerequisites and cut-off, with Grade 11 finals used for early offers. The only test that can matter is English: IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 or TOEFL 90, which many universities waive for CBSE or ISC students with English above 70 to 80 percent. Check the university's India page for its threshold.

How much money do I need to show for a Canadian study permit in 2026?

For applications from 1 September 2026, CAD 23,448 for the first year's living costs plus first-year tuition and return travel, so typically CAD 70,000 to 95,000 in total for a student at Toronto, UBC, McGill or Waterloo. Accepted evidence includes a Guaranteed Investment Certificate from a Canadian bank, an Indian education loan sanction letter, or four months of bank statements. You also need a Provincial Attestation Letter, which the university issues with the offer under the 2026 cap of 155,000 new permits.

What is the difference between co-op and a regular degree in Canada?

A co-op degree alternates study terms with paid work terms, typically four months each; Waterloo's version has five or six work terms across five years, and Toronto's PEY, UBC's co-op streams and SFU run variants. Graduates leave with 12 to 24 months of paid experience, earnings of CAD 40,000 to 80,000 across the degree, and often an employer. Admission to co-op is usually decided at entry with a higher cut-off, so it has to be selected on the application rather than joined later.

What percentage do I need for Waterloo computer science or engineering?

Waterloo publishes a range rather than a cut-off, and for Indian board students Computer Science and Software Engineering realistically start around 95 percent in the required Grade 12 subjects, with the other Engineering programmes from 92 to 95. Toronto Rotman Commerce sits around 92 to 96, UBC Computer Science around 93 and Sauder 92 to 95. Clearing the number only puts the file in the pool; the supplemental form decides which files in that pool get offers.

How often are Canadian study permits refused for Indian students?

Often, and at a higher rate than for any other large source country. Immigration department figures reported in late 2025 put the refusal rate for Indian study permit applicants at about 74 percent in August 2025, against roughly 32 percent two years earlier, while the overall international refusal rate sat near 40 percent. Thin proof of funds and an unconvincing study plan are the reasons cited most. A degree offer helps but does not protect the file.

How long can I work in Canada after a bachelor's degree?

Up to three years on a Post-Graduation Work Permit. The PGWP matches the programme length up to a three-year maximum, so a four-year bachelor's at a public university earns the full three. Degree graduates are exempt from the field-of-study restriction that applies to college diplomas; you need CLB 7 English, full-time study, and an application within 180 days of completing. Most college diplomas and private-public partnership programmes no longer qualify, which is why programme choice is part of the admissions decision.
