Applying to Australian universities from India

Australian universities admit on an equivalent ATAR calculated from your board marks, and for most courses the outcome is knowable before you apply. The difficulty has moved to the visa: a AUD 2,500 fee, a Genuine Student assessment that reads like an interview, and financial evidence of nearly AUD 30,000 in living costs. Two intakes a year and a two-to-three-year post-study visa make it the most flexible calendar of any destination.

Reviewed for the 2026-27 cycle. Deadlines and fees change; verify on the university's page before acting.

How admissions work

What Australia admissions offices actually weigh

01

Your board result becomes an ATAR

Australian universities convert overseas qualifications into an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank equivalent and compare it with the course's published minimum. For CBSE and ISC the usual basis is the average of your best four or five subjects excluding some non-academic ones; an ATAR of 80 typically corresponds to CBSE 70 to 75 percent, ATAR 90 to around 80 to 85, and ATAR 95-plus to roughly 88 to 92 or above, though each university publishes its own table. IB is mapped from the total score, with 30 points near ATAR 85 and 38 near 95. Where you clear the number and hold the prerequisite subjects, you are admitted; there is no essay and no interview outside medicine, some creative courses and scholarship rounds.

02

Prerequisites and the Group of Eight

The Group of Eight (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, Monash, Queensland, Western Australia, Adelaide) publish course-by-course entry marks, and the competitive ones are commerce, computer science, engineering, law and biomedical science at Melbourne, Sydney and UNSW, where Indian applicants typically need CBSE 88 to 93. Engineering requires Mathematics and usually Physics; science and biomedicine require Mathematics and a science; Melbourne's model is a broad generalist bachelor's followed by a graduate professional degree, so a student wanting to practise law or medicine there should plan for five to seven years. Outside the Go8, UTS, RMIT, Macquarie, QUT and Deakin admit at lower marks and carry stronger industry placement reputations in specific fields.

03

Two intakes change the strategy

Because Semester 2 starts in late July, an Indian student finishing CBSE in March can start in July of the same year with no gap, which no other destination allows. Semester 1 in February suits a student who wants a five-month break or who is combining Australian offers with a Northern Hemisphere decision. Not every course runs a July intake, medicine and some engineering streams are February only, and scholarship rounds are mostly tied to the February entry, so the choice of intake should be made per course. Offers are often conditional on final marks and can be converted within days of the board result, which makes Australia a strong contingency for students holding uncertain UK or Singapore outcomes.

04

Genuine Student, financial capacity and the visa file

The subclass 500 application is decided on the Genuine Student requirement, which replaced the older Genuine Temporary Entrant test. You answer four questions of up to 150 words each: your current circumstances and ties, why this course and this institution, what the course will do for your future, and anything else relevant including immigration history. Officers look for coherence between the course, your academic record and your stated plans, and they read gaps and unrelated course choices as risk. Financial capacity is evidence of AUD 29,710 for a year of living costs plus first-year tuition and travel, from acceptable sources including Indian education loans. Australian universities also pre-screen: many require a GS interview and financial documents before they issue the Confirmation of Enrolment.

Universities

Institutions we plan around

Not a ranking. A mix of reach, target and realistic options with a note on what each looks for from applicants like ours.
  • University of MelbourneGeneralist bachelor's then graduate degrees; CBSE 90-plus for commerce and science; the International Undergraduate Scholarship can cover full fees
  • University of SydneyStrong in law, medicine, engineering; Sydney living costs are the highest in the country; scholarships of AUD 10,000 to 40,000
  • UNSW SydneyEngineering and computer science leader; trimester calendar allows a September-ish entry; Scientia scholarships are competitive
  • Australian National UniversityResearch-heavy, Canberra costs lower; strong in politics, economics, physics; admits on a clear ATAR-equivalent table
  • Monash UniversityLargest Go8 by intake, Melbourne suburbs; pharmacy, engineering, IT and business; generous international merit awards
  • University of QueenslandBrisbane, lower living cost; strong in biomedical science, engineering, agriculture; realistic for CBSE 85 to 90
  • University of Western AustraliaPerth, cheapest Go8 city; engineering and mining; regional-adjacent classification can add post-study visa time
  • University of AdelaideMerged with UniSA into Adelaide University from 2026; Adelaide is a regional area for visa purposes, adding a year to the 485 for eligible graduates
  • UTS (Sydney) and RMIT (Melbourne)Industry-facing engineering, design, IT; lower entry marks than Go8; strong internship pipelines
  • Macquarie UniversitySydney business and actuarial studies; large Indian cohort; realistic admit with automatic scholarships
  • QUT and DeakinBrisbane and Geelong/Melbourne; Deakin's trimester model and Geelong regional status suit visa planning; solid targets for CBSE 75 to 85

What we do here

How the method adapts to Australia

  • We convert the student's predicted board result into an ATAR equivalent early and build a list where at least two Go8 courses are comfortably within range
  • We choose the intake per course, using July entry to remove the gap year for CBSE students and February entry where scholarships or medicine demand it
  • We write the four Genuine Student answers as a coherent narrative that matches the transcript and course, and rehearse the university pre-screen interview
  • We prepare the financial file to the AUD 29,710 living-cost standard plus tuition, with loan sanction letters that Home Affairs accepts
  • We plan the degree for the 485 visa: STEM honours streams that give Indian graduates three years under ECTA, and regional campuses that extend it
  • We apply for the Melbourne, Sydney, UNSW and Monash international scholarships in the first round, since later rounds are thinner

Common mistakes

What goes wrong for applicants to Australia

  1. 01Writing the Genuine Student answers around wanting to settle in Australia, which is the one thing they are designed to screen out
  2. 02Applying through an agent who lists courses by commission rather than by ATAR fit or PGWP-equivalent value
  3. 03Dropping Mathematics in Grade 11 and then discovering every commerce and science course needs it
  4. 04Assuming the Go8 name matters more than the course; a Melbourne generalist degree takes longer to reach a professional qualification
  5. 05Under-estimating living costs in Sydney and Melbourne, which now run AUD 30,000 or more a year
  6. 06Booking the July intake without checking that the specific course runs a Semester 2 entry

Questions

Applying to Australia from India

How much does it cost to study in Australia from India?

Typically AUD 65,000 to 85,000 a year at a Group of Eight university, which is about INR 37 to 49 lakh, made up of tuition of AUD 40,000 to 55,000 and living costs of AUD 25,000 to 32,000. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science charge AUD 80,000 or more in fees. Universities outside the Go8 charge AUD 30,000 to 40,000. Add the AUD 2,500 visa fee, Overseas Student Health Cover of roughly AUD 700 a year, and flights. International merit scholarships of 10 to 50 percent of fees are common for CBSE 90-plus applicants.

What is the ATAR equivalent for CBSE marks?

Each university publishes its own table, but as a working guide a CBSE or ISC best-of-four average of 70 to 75 percent is treated as around ATAR 80, 80 to 85 percent as around ATAR 90, and 88 to 92 percent or above as ATAR 95-plus. IB is converted from the total score, with 30 points close to ATAR 85 and 38 close to 95. Competitive Go8 courses such as commerce at Melbourne or engineering at UNSW sit at ATAR 90 to 95, so they typically want CBSE in the high 80s or above with the prerequisite subjects.

When are the intakes for Australian universities?

Two main intakes: Semester 1 starting in late February and Semester 2 in late July. Most bachelor's courses run both, though medicine and some engineering streams are February only. Indian students finishing board exams in March with results in May can start the July intake of the same year without a gap. UNSW, Deakin and a few others run trimesters, adding a September entry for some courses. Applications are rolling, so apply by October to December for February and by April to May for July.

What is the Genuine Student requirement for the Australian student visa?

It is the test at the centre of the subclass 500 decision, replacing the old Genuine Temporary Entrant statement. You answer four questions of up to 150 words each covering your current circumstances, why you chose this course and institution, how the course serves your future, and anything else relevant including immigration history. Officers judge whether the study plan is credible against your academic history and finances. Coherent, specific answers that connect the course to a career are what pass; generic answers and unexplained course changes are what get refused.

How long can I work in Australia after graduating?

Two years on the Temporary Graduate visa subclass 485 after a bachelor's degree, and three years after a master's. Indian nationals get an extra year under the Australia-India ECTA if their bachelor's is a first-class-honours STEM or ICT degree, so three years. Graduates of regional campuses, including Adelaide and Perth, can apply for a further one or two years. You must apply within six months of completion with an English test and health cover. During study the limit is 48 hours a fortnight in term time.

Is IELTS compulsory for Australian universities?

Not always. Most Group of Eight universities accept CBSE or ISC English above roughly 65 to 75 percent as proof of proficiency for admission, and IB English at grade 4 or 5. The visa is separate: Home Affairs generally accepts the university's assessment for students from India, but some applicants are asked for an IELTS 6.0 or PTE equivalent, and the 485 visa later requires a test. Where a test is needed, IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, PTE 58 or TOEFL 79 to 90 is the typical bar, higher for law, teaching and health.
