How to Apply to US Universities from India: 2026-27 Guide

Common App, ED versus EA, which colleges require the SAT in 2026-27, CBSE and ISC transcripts, essays, recommendations, CSS Profile, I-20 and F-1, and costs in INR.

Applying to US universities from India means one Common App account, one 650-word personal essay, a ten-entry activities list, three recommendations, a transcript with a school profile, one to four supplements per college, and a decision about which deadline to use: Early Decision or Restrictive Early Action on 1 November 2026, or Regular Decision in the first week of January 2027. Tests are required again at most of the top ten. The whole process takes about six months of real work if the profile already exists, and two to three years if it does not.

That is the outline. What makes it harder than it looks is that every piece has changed since the advice most Indian families rely on was written. Test policy has swung back to required. The activities section has dropped the position title. Additional Information is now 300 words. The visa carries a new fee. Below is the 2026-27 version, step by step.

Step 1: Understand what a US admissions reader is looking for

A selective US office reads an Indian file in roughly this order: the transcript and its rigour, test scores where required, then the essays, the activities list, the counsellor and teacher recommendations, and the supplements. No single element decides it. A CBSE 96 with nothing outside class is a rejection at a top-30 university; a 92 with a real body of work can get in.

You are also compared against other applicants from your school and region, not against a national cutoff. Two students from the same Delhi school with identical marks routinely get different outcomes, and the difference is almost always the evidence of intellectual direction outside the classroom. This is what the Plinth Method calls pillars: two things a student is known for, built over Grade 10 and 11, rather than a list of ten unrelated clubs.

Step 2: Choose the portal

The Common App covers over a thousand colleges and opened on 1 August 2026. A handful of colleges use something else.

Portal Who uses it Notes
Common App Almost every private and most public universities One personal essay, one activities list, college-specific supplements
University of California application UC Berkeley, UCLA and the other UC campuses Four personal insight questions, no recommendations, no tests considered, deadline 30 November 2026
MIT application MIT only Own short essays, SAT or ACT required
Georgetown application Georgetown only Own form, tests required
Coalition via Scoir A small number of colleges Rarely needed for an Indian applicant

Create the Common App account in August of Grade 12, or earlier: the account rolls over, so a Grade 11 student can start the activities list in the summer and lose nothing.

Step 3: Decide the deadline round

ED, EA, REA and RD are different bets, not just different dates.

Round Typical deadline Binding Who should use it
Early Decision (ED) 1 November 2026 Yes A family that has run the net price calculator and can pay the figure it shows
Early Action (EA) 1 November 2026 No Anyone; can be stacked at several colleges
Restrictive Early Action (REA) 1 November 2026 No, but forbids ED elsewhere Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Notre Dame, Georgetown applicants
ED II 1 to 5 January 2027 Yes A second binding shot after an early deferral or rejection
Regular Decision (RD) 1 to 5 January 2027 No Everything else

ED admit rates are usually two to three times the RD rate at the same college, and the advantage is real for international applicants because colleges use ED to lock in full-payers. That is exactly why it is dangerous: an ED admit at a college the family cannot afford means withdrawing, and the seat is gone. Decide the ED target by late September, when the essays are still drafts, not in the last week of October.

A sensible list for a strong Indian applicant has one ED, three to five EA, and six to eight RD choices, spread across reach, target and likely by data for that college and that profile. Ten reaches and a waitlist at Cornell is not a plan.

Step 4: Testing in 2026-27

For this cycle the SAT or ACT is required at Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Penn, MIT, Caltech, Stanford and Georgetown, plus public flagships including Purdue, UT Austin and the Florida system. Princeton and Columbia are test-optional this cycle only and have said scores return from 2027-28. Most of the rest of the top 50 remain test-optional.

The practical rule for an Indian applicant is simpler than the policy map. Prepare as though the test is required everywhere. Then, college by college, submit a score at or above the middle-50 range and withhold one below it where policy allows. Submitting no score to a test-optional college invites the reader to lean harder on a board mark they cannot easily calibrate. Sit the first SAT in the Grade 11 spring and a retake by October of Grade 12 at the latest; the SAT versus ACT decision for Indian students is covered separately.

English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo) is required unless the college waives it for English-medium schooling; many do for CBSE and ISC students, but check each college's international page.

Step 5: Transcripts, predicted grades and the school profile

US colleges want Grade 9 to 11 marks and whatever exists of Grade 12 at the time of application. Because CBSE and ISC board results arrive in May, after decisions, the mark your school sends in January, either a predicted grade or a mid-year mark, is what the reader uses. IB schools send predicted grades as a matter of course; CBSE and ISC schools often do not have a format, so ask your counsellor in August what they will send and when.

The school profile matters as much as the transcript. It should state how many students score above 95, which subjects and streams the school offers, whether marks are moderated, and where recent graduates went. Without it, a reader cannot tell whether your 91 is top of the class or middle. If your school has never produced one, the counsellor can write a one-page version; the Common App counsellor section has a place for it.

Rigour is read against what your school offers. A student who took the hardest available stream and scored 92 reads better than one who dropped Mathematics for a 96.

Step 6: Recommendations

The Common App takes one counsellor recommendation and, at most colleges, two teacher recommendations, submitted online through the recommender's own Common App login. Ask in August of Grade 12, choose teachers from Grade 11 in subjects related to the intended major, and give each a one-page brief: what you did in their class, what you want the college to know, and the deadline.

Most Indian school letters are two paragraphs of adjectives. What a US reader wants is a specific incident: the question you asked that changed the lesson, the project you extended without being asked. If your teacher has never written one, share a sample letter format; do not write it for them, since colleges compare the letter's voice with your essays.

Step 7: The essays

The personal essay is 650 words on one of seven prompts, unchanged from last year, and goes to every college on your list. Supplements are college-specific, usually one to four each: why this college, why this major, a community essay, sometimes short answers of 50 to 150 words. Stanford's short answers and Brown's Open Curriculum essay are where Indian files are separated.

Plan on five drafts of the personal essay, with the student doing the writing. A parent or counsellor who writes the essay produces a voice that does not match the activities or the interview, and readers have seen thousands of those. Finding a topic that only this student can write is the hard part; how to find a college essay topic sets out the exercises we use.

Step 8: The activities list and honours

The Activities and Experiences section allows ten entries of 150 characters each. From this cycle the position title is optional, so the description line has to state what you did and what changed. Order by significance, not chronology. Six to eight sustained entries with outcomes read better than ten thin ones.

Honours have a separate five-slot section. Additional Information is now capped at 300 words and should be used only for context a reader needs, such as a school that offers no AP or a year disrupted by illness, not for a second activities list.

Readers recognise a coaching-centre resume at a glance: an NGO founded in Grade 11, a paper in a pay-to-publish journal, an internship arranged by a parent. None of it helps and some of it hurts.

Step 9: Financial aid and the CSS Profile

If you will ask for need-based aid, most selective private colleges require the CSS Profile through College Board, and its deadline is often earlier than the application deadline. Fee waivers are not automatic for international applicants. A few colleges use their own International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) instead.

Only about ten colleges are need-blind for internationals and meet full demonstrated need: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Amherst, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Brown, Washington and Lee, and Notre Dame from the Class of 2029. Everywhere else, asking for aid makes your file need-aware, so the amount you request is weighed against your admissibility. Merit scholarships are a separate track with their own December deadlines at Vanderbilt, Emory, WashU, Duke, USC and Rice. The full picture is in our guide to need-blind universities for international students.

Run every college's net price calculator with your parents before the list exists. It takes twenty minutes and prevents the most expensive mistake in US admissions.

Step 10: Decisions, deposit, I-20 and the F-1 visa

Early decisions arrive in mid-December 2026. If deferred, send a short letter of continued interest with any new results. RD decisions arrive from late March 2027 and you commit by 1 May with a deposit.

The university then issues a Form I-20 once you have submitted financial evidence, usually bank statements or a loan sanction letter covering the first year. With the I-20 you pay the SEVIS I-901 fee (USD 350), complete the DS-160, pay the MRV fee (USD 185) and book an interview at a US consulate in India. A new USD 250 visa integrity fee is being phased in during 2026; check the consulate page for whether it applies to your appointment. Interviews run May to July and students typically fly in August. On an F-1 you can work 20 hours a week on campus, then 12 months of OPT after graduation, with 24 more months if the degree is STEM-designated.

What it costs in rupees

Private university Public flagship
Annual all-in (tuition, housing, insurance, travel) USD 80,000 to 95,000 USD 50,000 to 65,000
In INR ₹70,00,000 to ₹85,00,000 ₹45,00,000 to ₹57,00,000
Four years without aid about ₹3 to 3.5 crore about ₹1.8 to 2.3 crore

Need-based aid at the need-blind colleges can bring the private figure to near zero for a family earning under about USD 100,000. Merit awards at colleges such as Vanderbilt can cover full tuition. Everyone else should budget the sticker price and a visa file that shows year one in liquid funds.

The 2026-27 calendar in one place

The dates above are the typical pattern; confirm each college on our deadlines page or its own admissions site, because a few move by a day or two each year.

If you are in Grade 11 now

You have the one thing Grade 12 students do not: time to make the evidence exist. Lock your subjects to the hardest stream your school offers. Choose two pillars and build them, through a research question you can finish, a competition entered on schedule, or a project with a visible output. Book the first SAT for the spring. Draft the personal essay in the summer, before the Common App opens, and run the net price calculators with your parents in the same week. The Grade 11 plan sets this out month by month, and our college admissions counselling covers the arc from diagnosis to decision for families who want it managed.

Where this guide stops

Everything above assumes an Indian board or IB student applying for first-year entry to a selective four-year college. It does not cover transfer applications, community college routes, or the art and music portfolios that some programs require in place of supplements. It also assumes the family can either pay the calculator figure or is applying to the colleges that meet need; a student who needs full aid and is applying only to need-aware colleges should read the financial-aid guide first, because the college list has to be built differently. And nothing here changes the fact that admit rates for Indian applicants at the top twenty are two to five percent; the process can be done well and still end in a no, which is why the list needs six to eight colleges the student would happily attend and can realistically get into.

Questions this article answers

When does the Common App open for 2026-27 and when are the deadlines?

The Common App opened on 1 August 2026. Early Decision, Early Action and Restrictive Early Action deadlines are typically 1 November 2026, the University of California application closes on 30 November 2026, and Regular Decision and ED II deadlines fall between 1 and 5 January 2027. Scholarship deadlines at colleges such as Vanderbilt and Emory are often in early December, ahead of the RD date.

Do Indian students need the SAT to apply to US universities?

For the 2026-27 cycle Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell, Penn, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Georgetown, Purdue, UT Austin and the Florida public universities require an SAT or ACT. Princeton and Columbia are test-optional this cycle only. Most other colleges remain test-optional, but a score at or above a college's middle-50 range helps an Indian file, so plan a first sitting in Grade 11 and a retake by October of Grade 12.

How do US universities read CBSE and ISC marks?

As a trend across Grade 9 to 11, read alongside the school profile your counsellor submits. The Grade 12 board result arrives after decisions are made, so the predicted or mid-year mark sent in January is what counts. Selective offices know both boards well; what they cannot judge is context, so the school profile should state how many students score above 95 and which subjects the school offers.

What documents are needed for an F-1 student visa from India?

A Form I-20 issued by the university after you pay the deposit and submit financial evidence, the SEVIS I-901 fee receipt (USD 350), the DS-160 confirmation, the MRV fee receipt (USD 185), a valid passport, and proof of liquid funds for at least the first year. A new USD 250 visa integrity fee is being phased in during 2026. Interviews at the US consulates in India run from May to July for an August start.

How much does it cost to study in the US from India per year?

Typically USD 80,000 to 95,000 a year at a private university all-in, about INR 70 to 85 lakh, and USD 50,000 to 65,000 at a public flagship, about INR 45 to 57 lakh. Over four years a private degree without aid is INR 3 to 3.5 crore. Need-based aid at the ten or so need-blind colleges and full-tuition merit awards at colleges such as Vanderbilt, Emory and WashU are the two ways that figure comes down.
