For most Indian students the digital SAT is the better choice, because it is shorter, offered at more test centres in India and the Gulf, and cheaper per sitting. The ACT is the better choice for a minority who read fast and handle time pressure well, and the only way to know which group a student is in is a timed diagnostic of both. US universities accept the two tests equally, and none prefers one.
The question is more pressing in 2026-27 than it was three years ago, because a large group of selective universities has returned to requiring scores. A student who assumed "test optional" in Grade 10 can arrive in Grade 12 needing a score with two sittings left.
The two tests in 2026-27
Both tests changed shape in the last three years. The SAT went fully digital and adaptive in 2023 for international students. The ACT introduced its shorter format, with science made optional, from 2025, and it now applies to international sittings.

The single biggest practical difference is pace. The ACT asks roughly 40 percent more questions per minute across the core sections. Students who finish SAT practice modules with ten minutes to spare are ACT candidates; students who run out of time on the SAT should not consider it.
The second difference is adaptivity. On the SAT, a strong first module leads to a harder second module with higher scoring potential; on the ACT, all questions count equally and a fast, accurate student can bank an easy section. Neither is a trick, but each rewards a temperament.
A note on the ACT science section: since it became optional, Caltech has confirmed that ACT science and writing subscores are optional for fall 2027 applicants, and most universities follow the composite. A student applying for engineering who is strong in data reasoning can take it as a bonus; nobody should take it as a burden.
Which US universities require a test in 2026-27
This table reflects the universities' own admissions pages as of September 2026. Policies have changed every cycle since 2024, so check the page for every university on your list before the summer of Grade 12.

Two points for Indian applicants. First, "test optional" is not "test irrelevant" for an international student: a strong score is one of the few yardsticks a US reader can apply across curricula, and at test-optional universities, admitted students who submitted scores are consistently the majority. Second, Dartmouth's alternative of national exams is a real route for a student with a strong CBSE or ISC Grade 10 result and no test access, but it is the exception, not a plan.
India test dates and fees for 2026-27
The SAT is offered on the same dates worldwide. International registration closes about two weeks before each date, at 11:59 pm US Eastern time, and late registration is available for an extra fee.

Indian centres fill early for the October and December dates, and students in smaller cities routinely travel to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Chennai, or to Dubai, so register the day the window opens.
The ACT's international dates differ from its US dates and are spread over two days per window.

Fee: $188.50 without writing, $213.50 with, plus $42 for late registration. The ACT is delivered online at authorised test centres outside the US; India has centres in the major metros, but far fewer than the SAT, and seats in Grade 12 autumn are tight. How to choose: the diagnostic
Do not choose on reputation, on what a cousin took, or on the fact that the SAT is more familiar. Choose on data, and the data takes one weekend.
- Take a full-length official practice SAT under timed conditions using College Board's Bluebook app.
- A week later, take a full-length official ACT practice test, timed, with the three core sections and, if you are considering it, science.
- Convert both to a common scale using the published concordance and compare the percentiles, not the raw numbers.
- Look at the pattern of errors. Time-outs on the ACT point to the SAT; careless errors on easy SAT questions with time to spare point to the ACT.
- Ask which test you would rather sit twice. Preparation is 60 to 100 hours, and a test the student resents is a test the student under-prepares for.
If the percentiles are within five points of each other, take the SAT, for the practical reasons of centre availability and cost in India. If the ACT percentile is clearly higher, take the ACT and register early for the limited seats. Score targets, in context
Scores are read against the transcript, the curriculum and the rest of the profile. Targets that make sense for Indian applicants, by the tier of university on the list:

Two things about the numbers. A 1480 with a 95 percent board result, an upward grade trend and a real research pillar is a stronger application to a selective university than a 1560 with flat marks and a scatter of clubs; the score sets a floor, not a rank, which is why testing is planned inside the whole profile rather than on its own. And an Indian CBSE or ISC transcript is unfamiliar to most US readers, which is one reason the score carries more weight for international applicants than the same score does for a student from a known US school. A plan by grade
Grade 10. Take both diagnostics in the summer after Grade 10. Decide the test. No preparation yet beyond reading and mathematics fundamentals. The Grade 10 plan has the year's sequence.
Grade 11. Prepare for 60 to 100 hours across the year, with weekly full-length practice from three months before the first sitting. First official sitting in October or December of Grade 11, placed away from school exams. Second sitting in March or May. This leaves August of Grade 12 in reserve and the score in hand before essays start.
Grade 12. If there is no score, the August, September and October SAT dates and the September and October ACT dates still land before the 1 November early deadlines, and the November SAT lands for regular decision. Register the day the window opens, because Grade 12 seats in India go first. The Grade 12 timeline shows where the sittings fall against the rest of the season.
Where this advice stops
This article is about the US. For the UK, neither test is needed, and the equivalent decision is which admissions test the course requires (TMUA, ESAT, LNAT, UCAT and so on). For Singapore and Hong Kong, a strong SAT strengthens an international application to NUS, NTU and HKU but is not required for students with strong board or IB results. For Canada and Australia, scores are optional almost everywhere and rarely decisive. And every date, fee and policy above was checked in September 2026 against the official pages; universities and testing agencies revise them each cycle, so confirm on the official page before you register or build a plan around a requirement.
