How to Choose a Major When You Have No Idea What You Want

Undecided is fine for the US and fatal for the UK and Singapore. A two-pillar method, three exercises that surface a direction, and how to test a major first.

You do not choose a major first. You choose two pillars, the two things you want to be known for, and then find a major that sits in their overlap or squarely inside one of them. Then you test it with a project or a piece of research before you commit a subject choice, a competition calendar and an essay to it. Where you are applying decides how much of this must be settled by Grade 12: in the US, "undecided" is a normal answer; in the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong, it is not an answer at all.

Why the question is harder for Indian students

An Indian student is asked to choose a stream at fifteen and a course at seventeen, and the honest answer at both ages is usually "I do not know". The school and the coaching centre convert that into a default: science if the marks allow it, commerce if not, and a major chosen later from whatever the stream permits. So most students arrive in Grade 11 with a stream they did not choose and no major at all.

The advice that follows is worse. "Follow your passion" assumes a passion already exists. "Pick what pays" produces a computer science application from a student whose only evidence for computer science is that everyone else applied for it, and readers at selective universities see thousands of those files from India every cycle. Neither piece of advice helps a student who has interests but no way of turning them into a direction.

The other thing most advice misses is that "choosing a major" is a different task for each destination. It is worth being precise about that before doing any exercises.

Where undecided is fine and where it is fatal

The pattern is simple. The US and the Indian liberal-arts universities want intellectual direction, which is not the same as a declared major. Every other destination wants a subject named on the form and evidence that you have engaged with it. The UK destination page explains why: the reader is a lecturer in the department, and the only question is whether you will thrive in their course.

So a student applying to the US alone can carry uncertainty into Grade 12. A student applying to the UK, Singapore or Hong Kong must have a subject family by the end of Grade 11, because the subject choices, the super-curricular record and the statement all depend on it. A student applying to both, which is most of our students, needs the subject family by Grade 11 for the UK application and can stay flexible about the exact US major.

The pillar approach

Inside the Plinth Method, the second stage is choosing two pillars before choosing anything else. A pillar is a broad area a student can be known for: economics, biology, social impact, writing, sport, computing, design. The pillars are chosen for the student, not for a major, and they are chosen from what already exists in the record, not from what would look good.

The major then sits in the overlap. Two examples, both composites rather than real students. A Grade 11 student in Pune with a biology pillar (olympiad reading, a hospital volunteer record) and a writing pillar (school magazine editor, a Scholastic entry) has a natural overlap in public health, science communication, or medicine with a humanities edge. A student in Gurgaon with an economics pillar and a sport pillar has an overlap in sports economics, management, or behavioural science, and can apply for economics in the UK and "undecided, likely economics" in the US with the same evidence.

The reason to work this way is that the major is only one line of the application, while the pillars shape everything else: the subject choices, the competitions, the project, the recommendations. A major chosen first, with the profile bent to fit it, produces a file that reads as manufactured. A major found in the overlap of two real pillars produces a file that reads as a person. Three exercises that surface a direction

These are the exercises we run with students who say they have no idea. They take an afternoon. Do them on paper and keep the sheets.

  1. Subjects you read beyond the syllabus. List every book, article, video series or podcast you have consumed in the last twelve months that was not assigned. Sort them by field. Ignore what you scored in school; a student with 97 in chemistry who has never read a page of chemistry for pleasure does not have a chemistry pillar. The field with the longest list, or the field you kept coming back to, is a candidate.
  2. Problems you notice. For a week, write down every time you find yourself irritated by something that does not work: a queue, a pricing decision, a piece of software, a public-health message, a rule at school. Then ask which discipline owns each problem. Economics owns the queue and the pricing. Computer science owns the software. Sociology or policy owns the rule. The discipline that owns the most of what you notice is a candidate.
  3. Twenty-one details. This is the same exercise we use for finding an essay topic, turned on a field. Pick a candidate subject and write twenty-one specific, concrete facts you know about it without looking anything up: names, numbers, mechanisms, arguments, not adjectives. If you reach twenty-one in ten minutes, you have been paying attention to that field for a long time. If you stall at eight and start writing "it is very interesting", you have not.

Run the third exercise for each candidate the first two produced. Usually two fields survive. Those are the pillars, or close to them. The profile building service does this diagnosis in writing at the start of an engagement, but a student can do a rough version alone.

Test the major before you commit to it

A candidate major is a hypothesis. Before it decides your Grade 11 subjects, test it with the cheapest experiment that involves the real subject rather than the school version.

For a science or social-science major, that is a small research project: a question, some data you collected or requested, a method, a written result. Six to ten weeks, with a mentor if possible. The research mentorship page describes the full version, but the test version can be a survey of two hundred people or a dataset from a government portal analysed in a spreadsheet. If you enjoyed the tedious middle of it, the hypothesis holds. If you only enjoyed the idea of it, it does not, and that is a cheap thing to learn in Grade 10.

For computing, design, business or writing, the test is a project with a user: a tool someone uses, a product someone pays for, a publication someone reads. The passion project guide sets out a twelve-week plan for getting to first evidence, and the same plan works as a test of a major.

For medicine, law and engineering, the test is exposure: a fortnight shadowing in a clinic, a week in a law firm, a summer program with a lab component. The summer programs list is sorted by field, and a program is useful here precisely because it is a low-stakes way to find out that you do not want to spend six years on a subject.

A failed test is a good result. The students who struggle most in Grade 12 are the ones who chose a major in Grade 9, never tested it, and discovered in the essay drafts that they have nothing to say about it.

How the choice shapes subjects, competitions and essays

Once the pillars and a working major exist, three decisions follow from them, and this is where the order matters.

Subjects. UK courses publish required subjects, and Indian boards are mapped against A-levels: Mathematics and Physics for engineering, Chemistry for medicine, Mathematics at the highest level for economics at the strong departments. Singapore and Hong Kong require specific subjects per course. Even US engineering schools expect calculus and physics. A student who drops Mathematics in Grade 11 and discovers economics in Grade 12 has closed most of the UK and Singapore options, which is the single most common irreversible mistake I see in profile reviews. Competitions. Choose two or three from the competitions calendar that sit inside the pillars, and enter them on schedule from Grade 10 or 11. An economics pillar points to the John Locke essay and the Wharton investment competition; a biology pillar to the olympiad route and a research fair; a computing pillar to a built project and an open-source record. Competitions chosen after the major is settled read as a plan. Competitions collected before it read as a pile.

Essays. The US supplement that asks "why this major" and the UCAS question that asks why you want to study the course are both answered from the same material: the reading, the problems you noticed, the test project and what it taught you. A student who did the exercises above has that material. A student who chose the major from a ranking does not, and the essay shows it. Changing your major later, by country

A student who is wrong about the major in Grade 12 is not doomed, but the cost of being wrong varies enormously by destination, and that should shape how much uncertainty you carry into the application.

In the US, changing major within a college of arts and sciences is typically a form and a conversation with an adviser, and a large share of students do it. The exceptions are the capacity-limited majors: computer science and engineering at the large public universities, and any school that admits by major (business at several privates, engineering at most). Getting into those from inside the university is often harder than getting in at entry. If the working major is computer science, apply for it; do not plan to switch in later.

In Canada, the broad faculties (arts and science at Toronto, science at UBC) choose a specialisation after first year on grades. Moving from arts into engineering or business is a formal transfer with a cut-off. In Australia, the generalist bachelor's degrees at Melbourne and elsewhere are designed for the major to be chosen in the first year; moving across degrees is a new application.

In the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong, you were admitted to a course, and the course is the degree. A change of subject in the first term is sometimes possible within a faculty if a department has space, but a real change means withdrawing and reapplying, typically losing a year. At the IITs, branch change after the first year exists but is decided by CGPA against a handful of seats. The Singapore page is blunt about this: compare Computer Science, Data Science and Engineering at NUS as separate applications with separate cut-offs, because that is how the university treats them.

What to do this month

Grade 9 and 10. Run the three exercises now, without pressure. You are not choosing a major; you are finding out which two fields you already pay attention to. Keep Mathematics and the sciences open in the Grade 11 choice unless the exercises point clearly elsewhere, because they close more doors than any other subject decision.

Grade 11. Settle the two pillars by December. Run one test project or research piece between January and the summer. Choose competitions from the calendar that fit the pillars. If the UK, Singapore or Hong Kong is on the list, the subject family must be fixed by the end of the year because the statement and the predicted grades depend on it.

Grade 12. The pillars are what they are. For the US, apply with the major that sits in the overlap of the evidence you actually have, and use "undecided" only if the evidence genuinely points two ways. For the UK, five courses in one subject family. The essay and the supplements should be written from the test project and the reading, not from the ranking of the major.

Where this advice stops

This method assumes a student with some interests and no direction, which is most students. It does not apply to the small number who have known since Grade 8 and have the record to prove it; they should skip the exercises and run the test. It also does not settle the family argument about medicine, engineering or nothing, which is a separate conversation about risk and money rather than about direction. And for the rank-based Indian routes, JEE, NEET and CLAT, the major is the exam, and the only choice that matters is which exam to prepare for, decided by Grade 10.

Questions this article answers

Is it bad to apply undecided to US universities?

At most US universities, no. Admission is to the university or to a broad college of arts and sciences, and a large share of every entering class changes major at least once. What a reader does want is intellectual direction, which is different from a declared major: two or three subjects you have gone beyond the syllabus in, with evidence. Undecided with direction is fine. Undecided with a scattered activity list is the problem, and the label gets blamed for it.

Can I apply for different courses at different UK universities on UCAS?

You can, but it rarely works, because one personal statement goes to all five choices and each admissions tutor reads it for their own subject. A statement written for both economics and computer science will be weak for both. The practical rule is five courses in the same subject or close cousins, such as economics and PPE, or physics and engineering. If you genuinely cannot narrow it to one subject family by September of Grade 12, the UK is the wrong destination for that cycle.

How do I know if I actually like a subject or just score well in it?

Scoring well tells you the school version is easy for you; it does not tell you whether the real subject is interesting. The test is what you do with it when nobody is marking it. If you have read beyond the syllabus, noticed problems in the world that belong to that field, and can produce a long list of concrete details about it without looking anything up, the interest is real. If the only evidence is the mark, treat it as a strength, not a direction.

Does my major have to match my extracurriculars?

The activities should fit your two pillars, and the major should sit in the overlap of the pillars or squarely inside one of them. That is looser than a match. A student with a biology pillar and a writing pillar can apply for public health, neuroscience, or English, and the list will make sense for any of them. What fails is a major chosen because it sounds impressive, sitting next to a list that has nothing to do with it.

How easy is it to change major after I start?

It depends almost entirely on the country. In the US it is usually a form, except for capacity-limited majors such as computer science and engineering at large public universities. In Canada and Australia it is often a change of faculty with conditions. In the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong, admission is to a course, and moving to a different subject usually means reapplying from the start, sometimes after losing a year.
